Devonshot Jamaica Beach of Oakmarsh 'Marli', is our foundation bitch. Pictured with 2 of her daughters, Tia Maria (Oakmarsh Acorn) on the left and Lola (Oakmars Appeal) on the right.
Marli was born on 21st October 2006, 10 years after I first met her Grandfather (Arnac Bay Jetsam) winning his class at CRUFTS. It was 2 more years before I met her Grandmother (Baltimore Velvet Ellie of Devonshot), again at CRUFTS. Wendy Howitt (Devonshot Chesapeakes) told me that she planned to mate Ellie with Jetsam as soon as she came into season, the litter was born on 27th September 1998 and unfortunately I wasn't in a position to take a puppy at that time so I decided to keep a close eye on the pup she kept, meeting up at Discover Dogs and CRUFTS each year, 'Louie' was to become LUX CH Devonshot Horses Ghost, Marlis' father!
In 2001 a Jetsam daughter, winning the Junior bitch class caught my eye, this was Arnac Bay Pride. In 2003 she was mated to Chestnut Hills Mallard, a stunning dog that Christine Mayhew (Arnac Chesapeakes) had imported from the USA in 2001, this mating produced Arnac Bay Volta, who was purchased by Wendy & Dave Howitt of Devonshot Chesapeakes, 'Acorn' is Marlis' mum.
The temperament of our dogs is excellent and we are striving to keep this along with working ability and the fantastic, classic Chesapeake coat that Marli herself has; at CRUFTS 2010 the judge, Breed Specialist Janet Morris (Penrose), remarked that if there was a prize for best coat then Marli would have won it! Janet gave Best of Breed, CRUFTS 2010, to Teague (Devonshot Indian Goes Brave), he was our foundation sire.
Marli is a fantastic pigeon dog, happy to retrieve whole fields of shot birds to the game bag! Teague (Tia and Lolas dad) is a great beating / picking up dog, working on shoots in Dorset, he is a remarkable game finder, used to sweep the heavy cover and water for any birds missed by the first retrievers. Tia has passed her Gundog Club levels 1 and 2 and is showing a positive attitude to her work, with all the attributes of mum and dad, certainly one to be watched! Rana has spent a season beating (2012/13) and will be joining the picking up team in Dorset for the 2013/14 season.
Wendy & Dave convinced us to show Marli and has done consistantly well (see "show success" page), winning the CBR Club Top Show Puppy 2007 trophy and gaining her Stud Book Number at the Driffield Championship Show in 2012 under judge Dr Ronald James. This means she is qualified for CRUFTS for life!
Marli is now a mother herself, her first litter was born on 3rd September 2010, the lucky father 'Teague' has been her best chessie friend since meeting at the CBR club show in 2007! He is Show Champion Devonshot Indian Goes Brave - he gained his first CC and BOB at CRUFTS 2010 under judge Janet Morris, winning his 3rd CC, to make him a Show Champion, at Bath 2013 under judge Becky Johnson.
We kept a bitch puppy out of this litter 'Oakmarsh Acorn' (Tia Maria), in 2011 she was Best Puppy in show at both the CBRC Limit & Championship shows, Best Puppy in breed at 5 Open shows, Reserve Best of Breed at 5 Open shows and Best Puppy in breed at 3 Championship shows! She has followed in her mothers footsteps to win the CBR Club Top Show Puppy 2011 trophy, she also won the 'Our Dogs' Top Chesapeake Bay Retriever Show Puppy award!
Her brother, 'Oakmarsh Assateague' (Rana) was Best Puppy at Bath Championship show, Best Puppy and Best of Breed at Windsor Championship show and her sister 'Oakmarsh Appeal' (Lola) was Best Puppy and Best of Breed at the East Anglian Gundog Club Open show.
The three Oakmarsh 'A' littter puppies, O.Appeal (Lola), O.Assateague (Rana) and O.Acorn (Tia Maria) also competed in the KC/Agria Breeders Challenge in 2011, winnning the 'Top Breeder 2011' title for Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, (the competition was run over the 2011 season of Championship shows). All 3 puppies have qualified for CRUFTS 2012/13/14!
Teague and Marlis daughter Tia Maria, Oakmarsh Acorn, won her first CC (Challenge Certificate) at the United Retriever Club Championship Show in 2013 under Patsy Hollings (Gunalt). This means she now has a Stud Book Number and is qualified for CRUFTS for life! She was awarded her second CC at East of England Championship show 2018 under judge Jenny Miller
Jack & Tias daughter Fennel, Oakmarsh Chestnut, won her first CC at East of England Championship Show 2017, under Zena Thorn-Andrews. This means she now has a Stud Book Number and is qualified for CRUFTS for life! She was awarded her second CC at Blackpool Championship Show 2018 under judge Jane Eyeington.
Rana & Zaras daughter Diva, Oakmarsh Dancing Diva, won a Reserve CC at SKC 2018, giving her a Stud Book Number and qualifying her for CRUFTS for life! She won her 1st CC and was Best Bitch at CRUFTS 2019 under judge Chris Bexon.
